Triple life sentence for man who killed Limpopo Professor Mohamed Tayob and two other men
Emmanuel Charles Maboko, the man who was found guilty of killing three men has been handed a triple life sentence.
Maboko was sentenced on Friday in the Polokwane High Court.
The 33-year-old was found guilty of murder, unlawful possession of a firearm and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) .
Maboko carried out the murders between March 2022 and April 2022.
He killed three men including Mohamed Saber Tayob, 53, a professor at the University of Limpopo, Malatji Putana Lucas, 33, and Luvhimbi Edward Muofhe, 57.
Explaining the merits of the case Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Ledwana Maselela said Tayob was shot and killed in Sterkpark in Polokwane on March 13, 2022.
He was shot while jogging along Munnik Road.
On April 1, 2022 Lucas was shot and killed in Mabocha village, in Tubatse. Police said he had been building the accused a house.
Three days later on April 4, 2024, Maboko went to a BMW motor vehicle dealership in Nirvana armed with a firearm.
Police said he demanded the car keys of a grey BMW X6.
“In the process, a male customer, Luvhimbi Edward Muofhe who took his vehicle for service, was shot and killed by the accused.”
Maboko also assaulted the employees at the BMW dealership.
Police arrested Maboko and he was denied bail pending the outcome of the trial.
In addition to life imprisonment for each count of murder, Maboko was also handed 15 years for the assault charge and three years for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
In welcoming the sentence Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe said:
"I would like to appreciate the dedication and commitment displayed by investigating officer and everyone involved in cases until the final hefty sentencing by court emphasizing that justice has been served.“
